What we call science is the systematization of information obtained from nature.  Nature has had its own laws from the beginning.  Some of these laws are easy to express, while others stretch our understanding and even our sense of logic.  Our efforts to understand nature and its workings, that is our production of scientific knowledge, will never end.  We may never truly understand the workings of nature, or get close to the real truth.  Therefore, it is ridiculous to behave as if we knew all of the workings of nature and to say “this is not scientific, it is in conflict with the (known) laws of science”.  The clearest example of this is when we see the workings of quantum physics in biological structures.  When nature is working, it does not know the laws of our science and doesn’t even take notice of them.  Nature even sometimes winks at us with “anomalies”.  We learn from nature but we cannot impose on nature the laws we have learned from it.

Those who recognise that significant discoveries in science are very often prompted by observations that do not fit expectations will find a stimulating challenge in accumulating evidence that it is possible to elicit psychic functioning in experiments with ordinary volunteers acting as subjects. Even more convincing results occur with specially selected subjects.

The future of U.S. anti-terrorism technology could lie near the end of a Moscow subway line in a circular dungeon-like room with a single door and no windows. Here, at the Psychotechnology Research Institute, human subjects submit to experiments aimed at manipulating their subconscious minds.  Elena Rusalkina, the silver-haired woman who runs the institute, gestured to the center of the claustrophobic room, where what looked like a dentist's chair sits in front of a glowing computer monitor. "We've had volunteers, a lot of them," she said, the thick concrete walls muffling the noise from the college campus outside. "We worked out a program with (a psychiatric facility) to study criminals. There's no way to falsify the results. There's no subjectivism."

In this article from Wired, Sharon Weinberger discusses "mind-reading" technology that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hopes to use to identify terrorists. The DHS is interested in Semantic Stimuli Response Measurements Technology (SSRM TEK), which has been developed at the Psychotechnology Research Institute in Moscow. SSRM Tek is a software package which can, according to those who developed it, measure peoples' responses to subliminal messages presented to them in a computer game. Terrorists' responses to scrambled images (of, say Osama bin Laden or the World Trade Center) are apparently different to those of innocent people.

In science, the acceptance of new ideas follows a predictable, four-stage sequence. In Stage 1, skeptics confidently proclaim that the idea is impossible because it violates the Laws of Science. This stage can last from years to centuries, depending on how much the idea challenges conventional wisdom. In Stage 2, skeptics reluctantly concede that the idea is possible, but it is not very interesting and the claimed effects are extremely weak. Stage 3 begins when the mainstream realizes that the idea is not only important, but its effects are much stronger and more pervasive than previously imagined. Stage 4 is achieved when the same critics who used to disavow any interest in the idea begin to proclaim that they thought of it first. Eventually, no one remembers that the idea was once considered a dangerous heresy.

Belief in psychic events such as precognitive dreams runs quite high in the general population of the U.S.—between 25% and 50% in most surveys. But among blacks here, the rate of belief is still higher. Belief in predictive dreaming was affirmed by 92% of the 116 African-Americans I interviewed (as well as by 84% of 25 black male prisoners who responded to questionnaires), but by a much lower 57% of a matching white sample of 80. Thus in my samples all but a small percentage of blacks believe in predictive dreams, while only something over half of whites do.

This is the second in a series of articles on the role of the experimenter and additional personnel (other than the subject) taking part in parapsychological experiments. It reviews the evidence for psi-mediated experimenter effects, or the communication of experimenter bias, when all normal (i.e., sense-based) channels of communication are eliminated. Experiments in two broad categories are reviewed: (a) nonintentional psi experiments in which the subjects are unaware of certain important aspects of the test situation, or may not even know that they are taking part in a psi test; and (b) experiments in which the experimenter deliberately tries to influence the results by means of his own PK or ESP. When significant results are obtained in the first category, they may be due either to telepathy from the experimenter and/or his associates (psi-mediated experimenter effects) or to clairvoyance of the testing situation on the part of the subject (psi-mediated experimental effects). Significant results in the second category suggest either a direct influence of the experimenter upon the subject's responses by means of PK or an indirect influence by means of ESP. It is concluded that in psi research it may not be possible to differentiate between the experimenter and his experiment, and, therefore, between psi-mediated experimenter and psi-mediated experimental effects.

Human memory, the ability to recall vivid mental images of past experiences, has been studied extensively for more than a hundred years. But until recently, there's been surprisingly little research into cognitive processes underlying another form of mental time travel -- the ability to clearly imagine or "see" oneself participating in a future event.

Many believe there are some people ("sensitives" or "psychics") who can receive the thoughts of others, and even transmit their own thoughts to others. This direct mind-to-mind communication is often said to be instantaneous and independent of distance. Proponents sometimes claim all people have this ability to some degree, and that this explains many curious events in daily life, such as apparently pre-cognitive dreams. The catch-all term for this alleged ability is extra-sensory perception, or ESP (sometimes called "psi," like the Greek letter). Parapsychology is the term used for the serious study of such claims. So far, parapsychology seems to be a science that cannot even demonstrate that its subject matter exists, let alone offer explanations for it.
